Life and Death Are in the Power of the Tongue

I’ve been reminded many times over these past weeks about the power of the words we speak and specifically that ‘life and death are in the power of the tongue’. I was in Singapore a few days ago meeting with work colleagues for the work I do at CV (Christian Vision). I took a short devotional with the team where we did a short study of these scriptures:

A brother offended is more unyielding than a strong city, and quarrelling is like the bars of a castle. From the fruit of a man's mouth, his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:19-21 ESV

The questions I asked them were

  • What stands out to you?

  • What will you do about it?

We read a number of versions of those verses out loud. There were 6 of us in the room and each person had something different to share. What stood out to me by the end of our time was that our words produce a harvest. This harvest however would be produced regardless and the words that are spoken will either produce good where many will enjoy the fruit, or bad where this would cause sickness or death among many.

There was so much depth to our conversation that I can’t possibly do it justice. I gave an option before I started my devotional, “Would you like to hear something that God has spoken to me this morning, about a scripture or would you like to study it together?” How much richer it was when everyone got to take part.

What stands out to you?
