Top Three Blockers to People Coming to Faith

The number one blocker for 18-35-year-olds coming to faith is personal (48%), followed by intellectual (20%) and believing God is irrelevant (9%) - see image below.

Personal blockers typically present themselves as a lack of self-worth and value or an understanding that their own personal sin stands in the way of their relationship with God.

At the heart of it, the personal blocker is the key blocker to many coming to faith as it is the true heart of the issue. Oftentimes the presentation of an intellectual blocker and the belief that God is irrelevant, are masks for the true blocker of a misperception of their worth and value or an understanding of their own personal sin.

As people increase in openness to a conversation about God, their blocker shifts from intellectual and from ‘God is irrelevant’ to personal.

Interestingly, sometimes what Christians perceive to be the blockers to people coming to faith are not what they actually are. The way we offer connection and engage with people can encourage them to open up in a more genuine way and therefore influence the outcome of their journey toward God.
